One thing I love about Ethan is that he calls me pretty during some of my most flustered, frizzy-haired, strawberry-stains-on-my-shirt moments. Today when he got home from work (which is at lunch time these days) he said “Hi, cute lady.” I guess my look told him I didn’t feel too cute because he asked me if I was okay. “Yeah, I just want to feel like a person, not a babysitter,” I said. He responded, “Babysitters are people too.”

Despite a little fluster which happens everyday right before Carver and Kennon’s nap time, I have felt very much like a person lately:

A person who runs half marathons (1 2010 goal checked off!)

A person who gets pedicures with her little sister who could go into labor at any moment

A person with a 1 year old who can walk!

A person who gets butterflies when I think about moving in 3 months…

Its Friday and its good to be blogging. If I was going to catch you up, I would tell you about Ethan getting cut to half-time, God abundantly providing for us, Carver’s “cyclical vomiting” for the past 30 days and the calendar I’m making for him, but I won’t. I’m going to go play with my 2 favorite boys.

Have a wonderful weekend!

My husband, Ethan is going to guest-star for today’s Teachable Tuesday. While I normally “teach” with random cooking/craft tips, he has some words of wisdom to impart:

The following verse gave me a great bit of joy this morning (Psalm 40:2),

“He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”

Lately I’ve been pretty prone to frustration, even at the littlest things, and this has become very…err…frustrating. In the past couple days, though, I’ve been able to take a deep breath and put things in perspective. If I trust that God is a solid rock on which I can stand, I can get past the furstration and see the incredible life I have. I have an incredible, wonderful son, and a wife that is youthful, joyous, and endlessly supporting, and a job that, although is very tedious at times, provides for my family and is actually rewarding at times.

It is so easy to be mired down by things that happen or circumstances or just general oppression, but I believe with my whole self that we can trust God. He is the most solid rock on which we can stand, and He allows us to do so! Instead of laying down to it all, I say screw whatever’s oppressing us! There is an alternative to the tumult!

Thanks, Ethan. Also, I have to say, you’re looking pretty good with that new haircut.

Double Word Wednesday! Lucky you.

Repent therefore and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus.

Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents from sending calamity.

I came across these verses in the Bible study I’m doing. I love how scripture can reveal new things each time you read it. I know I had read the first verse, from Acts before because it was highlighted in my Bible. But when I read it yesterday, it spoke of new refreshment. The verse from Joel sang the same tune, so I included both. I pray that as you read this, you will hear God’s eager invitation and respond wholeheartedly.

Stick with me here… this might be a long one, but its worth it. I hope.

Sometimes I get so mad thinking about what “Christian Life” looks like in America. What does it mean to be a Christian? To vote republican? To dress up on Sundays? To judge people who don’t follow the rules?
My heart breaks for the wrong impression we give. The people who Jesus spent time with, the sick, the emotionally hurting, the outcasts and the sinners are the very people who feel most rejected by today’s Christians.
Is life as a Christian all lollipops and rainbows? Is it just about staying sober and abstinent? You better not curse, either, because then you’re probably not a Christian.
Well, shit, that doesn’t sound all that great.

To me, Christian Life is my relationship with God. Not my relationship with going to church on Sunday, but a real relationship with Him. I doubt Him, I get mad at Him, I get scared and lazy. He reassures me, forgives me, comforts me and encourages me. Sometimes our relationship seems as big and hard to grasp as my view from the top of a mountain on the Appalachian Trail. Sometimes it is as real as a hearing Him say “Valerie, you know how much you love your child? I love you even more.”

Andrew Murray describes intimacy with God much more eloquently than I:

“The precious blood of Christ has opened the way for the believer into God’s presence, and intimacy with Him is a deep, spiritual reality. He who knows the full power of the blood is brought so near that he can always live in the immediate presence of God and in the enjoyment of the unspeakable blessings attached to it. There, the child of God has the assurance of God’s love; he experiences and enjoys it. God Himself imparts it. He lives daily in the friendship and fellowship of God. As God’s child he makes known to the Father, with perfect freedom, his thoughts and wishes. In this intimacy with God, he possesses all that he needs; he lacks no “good thing” (Psalm 84:11). His soul is kept in perfect rest and peace, because God is with him (Isaiah 26:3). He receives all necessary direction and teaching. God’s eye is ever upon him, guiding him. In intimacy with God, he is able to hear the softest whispers of the Holy Spirit. He learns to understand the slightest sign of his Father’s will and to follow it. His strength continually increases, for God is his strength, and God is ever with him.

Fellowship with God has a wonderful influence on his life and character. The presence of God fills him with humility, fear and a holy circumspection. He lives as in the presence of a king. Fellowship with God produces God-like inclinations in him. Beholding the image of God, he is changed into the same image (2 Corinthians 3:18). Dwelling with the Holy One makes him holy. He can say, “It is good for me to draw near to God” (Psalm 73:28).

Oh, you who are the children of the new covenant, do you not have a thousand times more reasons to speak in the same way, now that the veil has been torn asunder and the way opened for living always in God’s holy presence? May this high privilege awaken our desires. Intimacy with God, fellowship with God, dwelling with God and He with us-may it become impossible for us to be satisfied with anything less. This is the true Christian Life.”
